AJ is a trainee in our Melbourne hub, known for his determination, drive, and proactive approach to achieving his career goals.

His aspirations to pursue a career in sports management have led him to volunteer to coach junior cricket, work for the St Kilda AFL club, and study for a double diploma in events and sports management.

AJ’s career goal is rooted in his passion for sports, and he doesn’t shy away from going after it. His journey to his dream job showcases his willingness to take action and learn new skills along the way.

“I started volunteering at St Kilda Football while I was studying,” AJ shares. “I’m also volunteering as a cricket coach for the local club, coaching an under-10 mixed boys and girls team on Fridays. I really love it. The social aspect, interacting with the kids, and seeing them improve is so rewarding.”

AJ wants a career in sports management

“The coaching I’m doing is a huge step toward my career goal, and my TAFE diploma will get me into some good things as well. My dream job would definitely be working for Cricket Australia or Cricket Victoria,” said AJ.

AJ has a brilliant ability to identify his goals and understand what he needs to do to achieve them, but what stands out most is his willingness to step out of his comfort zone in pursuit of personal growth.

For AJ, one of the most profound changes in his Jigsaw journey has been the growth of his self-confidence. Early on, AJ struggled with asking for help, something he found difficult during school. However, his time at Jigsaw has helped him overcome this barrier.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to ask for help,” he says. “I used to hate asking for help in school; I felt I should be able to do everything myself. But now I understand that everyone needs help at times. It’s something I’m working on, and I’ve really seen growth in myself.”

AJ acknowledges that confidence isn’t something that comes easily. Sometimes, it’s about pushing through fears and discomfort.

“Sometimes, I just need to grit my teeth and push myself harder. Pressure makes diamonds,” he reflects. “In situations like this interview, I know I have to put myself out there to get better.”

In addition to developing his confidence, AJ notes that his ability to take on feedback has also improved.

“I’m working on becoming better at accepting feedback, especially constructive feedback. It’s something I’ve struggled with in the past, but I’m slowly getting better at it and learning to take it on board in a more positive way,” said AJ.

For now, AJ will continue working on his transferable skills at Jigsaw in preparation for his career in sports management.

“Right now, being at Jigsaw feels like the right place for me. For anyone fresh out of school or between jobs who wants to build new skills for a better career, Jigsaw is a great place to start. The environment is incredibly supportive, with trainers encouraging everyone to do their best. It’s a place where anyone can thrive, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a go,” said AJ.

While AJ works diligently towards his career goals, he does have a message for Australian businesses wanting to be more inclusive: “Honestly, it’s about listening. Sometimes, all people need is for someone to hear their needs, allow them to advocate for themselves, and truly understand what they need to thrive in the workplace. From there, it’s about making an effort to meet those needs,” said AJ.
