Nixy began her work-readiness journey with Jigsaw in 2022, after graduating from school in 2018 and completing work experience across multiple libraries, where her tasks included sorting and general organisation.
Since joining Jigsaw, she’s gained confidence, experience, friendships and a paid traineeship. “I’m really liking it,” said Nixy.
Now, Nixy is working towards an exciting goal: setting up her own online store to sell handmade items. With a passion for arts and crafts, she plans to create and sell her own scarves and textiles, and is considering platforms like Depop and Etsy to get started.
“I’ve made a head start by recording some information in a spreadsheet about how much my stuff will cost,” she said. “I want to sell mostly scarves and some blankets.”
In the meantime, Nixy continues to build her transferable skills through hands-on work experience at Jigsaw.
“I’m doing file management at the moment for the Cardinia Council. It involves taping down the rips and removing staples or dog ears.”
Through this work, Nixy plays an important role in a broader team process, preparing files so they can move through scanning and quality control. She has also gained experience in scanning and quality control tasks, developing a strong understanding of workplace systems and routines.
When asked about her strengths, Nixy is clear and confident.
“I’ve learned that I am a good worker and I do everything very well – I’m very precise.”
This attention to detail, combined with her growing independence, has become one of her key strengths. In fact, independence is one of the things she enjoys most about her time at Jigsaw.
“Working independently is probably my favourite thing.”
Alongside her work skills, Nixy has also built meaningful connections. “I’ve made some friends here.”
These friendships, combined with the structure of a real work environment and the support of staff, have contributed to a positive and rewarding experience. “The staff at Jigsaw help me a lot.”
Nixy’s dad, Tony, has seen a great improvement in her wellbeing since starting with Jigsaw.
“Nixy’s life changed for the better when she started working with Jigsaw three years ago. They are person-centred, and they tailor to strengths, build transferable skills and foster positive social connection. They even gave Nixy the opportunity to transfer to their Sydney workplace for a while. She is back in Melbourne now and goes to work with a smile on her dial,” said Tony.
Outside of work, Nixy continues to explore her creativity through loom knitting, a hobby that directly connects to her future business goals.
“I loom knit my scarves… I have this loom and wool and turn it into a scarf.”
As she looks ahead, Nixy is also exploring external employment opportunities, while continuing to build her confidence and skills through her traineeship.
From gaining consistent work experience to planning her own small business, Nixy’s journey reflects the power of a supportive, structured environment in helping young people build independence, confidence and a clear vision for their future.
