At Jigsaw, our mission is simple – to level the playing field for people with disability in the Australian workforce.
Achieving this, however, is not simple. Our approach has been carefully developed and refined over our 11 years, and has proven successful through hundreds of transitions from our program into mainstream employment.
Why digitisation?
Our vehicle for achieving this is digitisation and we’ve been asked over the years why. Why digitisation over any other work function?
It may seem like a task too specific to carry any wide-reaching lessons. But, paired with our Academy program – where trainees learn 20 soft skills – the digitisation process can help our trainees put their new, transferable skills straight into action, in a real workplace setting.
The training workflow
The digitisation process begins with document preparation, before moving on to scanning and quality control. Throughout each step of the process is an opportunity for learning and skill development.
The document preparation stage teaches trainees the importance of following processes and instructions – a crucial foundation, as mistakes here could disrupt the entire digitisation workflow.
During scanning, trainees develop communication and teamwork skills, collaborating with colleagues and fellow trainees handling the steps before and after them. Finally, the quality control stage builds attention to detail and focus, helping trainees develop skills that enable them to consistently produce high-quality work in future roles.
Accessibility through structure
In addition to developing practical skills, the digitisation process is particularly well suited as a training tool because of its repetitive and structured nature.
This makes it easier to learn for trainees with diverse learning needs. The consistent, step-by-step nature of the work allows trainees to build confidence, reinforce skills, and feel comfortable as they progress towards mainstream employment, in a real-world workplace setting.
Meeting market demand
And importantly, digitisation is in high demand right now. Businesses are increasingly seeking to convert paper records into digital records to increase business efficiency, enhance security and improve costs.
This high demand and timely relevance means that Jigsaw can source adequate volumes of work experience for trainees. Additionally, it also allows us to build rich business relationships with a range of prospective employers, broadening our pool of employment opportunities for trainees.
Unlocking independence
For some, digitisation is simply a process to enhance business efficiency. For us, it’s a means of equipping people with the skills they need to be successful in their pursuit of mainstream employment, affording them the purpose and financial independence that comes with a career.
If you know of a business that might have digitisation needs, please get in touch today. Your paper records could unlock employment opportunities for someone working hard towards their career goals.
